Local athletes earn West Central Conference honors

GREENCASTLE -- Recently the West Central Conference announced its All-County and team sport champions, with many local athletes making the list. Putnam County had four teams atop their respective sports.

GHS had girls' and boys cross country and boys golf, with North Putnam taking football honors

The GHS girls cross country team (1st, 19 points) placed five girls on the WCC team. Colleen Weatherford was first overall with a time of 20:25, with Kayla Cash placing fifth, Abigail Wilson sixth, Paige Pickens seventh and Emily Gill was eighth.

Cloverdale's Claudia Monnett was third overall and North Putnam's Katie Douglas was fourth. The Clovers and Cougars fielded incomplete scores. South Putnam was third overall with 72 points, but failed to place anyone in the top 10 at the conference meet.

WCC champion GHS boys cross country team (1st, 27 points), with Ryan Stevens leading four GHS runners with a second place finish in a time of 17:07. Also placing were Tyler Hudson (3rd), Nathan Eubank (5th) and Hunter Mitchell (6th).

South Putnam's Hunter Barr (7th) and Shea Arnold (10th) also made the WCC team, with the Eagles placing third with 63 points. Cloverdale's Joe Rumley was eighth overall and his team was fourth with 98 points. North Putnam was fifth as a team with 137 points, but didn't have a runner crack the top 10.

Led by All-WCC players Sonney Basham, Kyle Parker, Brandon Query and Evan Smith, GHS boys' soccer finished first with a 3-0 record.

North Putnam was fourth with a 0-3 record and placed Stephen Freund, Chandler Meyer and Cody Summerlot on the team.

The semi-state champion North Putnam Cougars won the WCC with a perfect 5-0 record and placed six players on the All-Conference team

Seniors Travis Franklin, Caleb Vondersaar and Travis Kratt were joined by juniors Nate Bryan, Kolten Everts and Hank Spencer on the squad.

South Putnam finished second and is represented by Seth Arnold, Brayden Freeman, Grant Zimmerman, Wade Custis and Rob Gibson. GHS had Levi App, Tanner Battin, Keegan Remsburg and Jesse Vermillion make the team. The Clovers placed Jordan Brinkman, Matt Hall and Donavan Scisney on the All-Conference team.

The GHS girls' soccer team was second in the conference with a 2-1 record and was represented by Whitney Brotherton, Hannah Deer, Katie Farris and Melody White.

North Putnam was fourth overall with a record of 0-3 and had Maggie Pinney and Cayla Kientz make the team.

The Cloverdale girls' volleyball team finished second in the conference with a record of 4-1. Breegan Andersen, Stacia Shepherd and Bradanne Toney all made the All-WCC team.

North Putnam (4th, 2-3) placed Megan Robinson on the team and South Putnam (5th, 1-4), with Emily Dabkowski and Alex McHugh were selected to the squad.
