Greencastle wins pair against South Vermillion

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- A week of wintry weather, finals, a conference meet and a marquee Saturday meet meant that Tuesday's Greencastle swim meet with South Vermillion might have been on the back burner in terms of importance normally.

However, this was the same meet last year that saw the girls team take an unexpected hit and fall to the Wildcats.

While the boys' garnered a 136-44 win, the girls' squad had to fight hard and use multiple relay wins to knock off the visitors 104-80.

Six different boys' swimmers won races for Greencastle, which swept all but the diving competition. Nash Firebaugh and Jay Guffey grabbed two wins apiece, while Jesse Elkins, Walter Chiarella, Mitchell Ball and Cody Watson all claimed one win.

Each of the above, along with Joey Kass, were also a part of the three winning relay events. The team also took seven 1-2-3 finishes on the evening.

As the boys' team was in control of the pool, a much tighter race was developing in the girls' portion of the meet.

Although they swept the relays, the Greencastle girls' squad split the remaining races with the Wildcats and needed big performances from Melanie Bittles, Emily Wheeler and Sydney Cassida, as well as strong depth, to keep the visitors at bay.

Multiple second and third place finishes for the hosts kept South Vermillion from taking any advantage that they might have had from individual wins and allowed Greencastle to hammer down the meet late.

In the context of the week, South Vermillion was the first of three meets, featuring county foe North Putnam on Thursday and a big weekend match-up with Bloomington South, whose squads are ranked No. 27 (girls) and No. 4 (boys) in the state rankings.

Anticipation for the two later meets was certainly on the mind of the squads and Greencastle head coach Luke Beasley, which, in his mind, might have made this meet a harder one to gear up for.

"I think in general, our teams had a difficult time finding motivation tonight, finding juice for the meet. I think you can blame the coach for that. They're all tired. They look tired. They're swimming tired," Beasley said, also referencing a quick turnaround between multiple practices and the meet.

Even with little downtime, both squads are exhibiting the little details that Beasley is looking for.

"The kids are practicing well. They're training really well. We're seeing all the things that we want to see either in practice or in the competition. They're a mature group. They know that not every night is going to be their night," Beasley said.

"It's always going to be someone new who's going to step up and have something to get excited about. Guys like Joey Kass, Jesse Elkins, Dalton Kastigar, Rosio Gomez, and Rachel Custis stood up for us tonight."
