Lady Eagles drop pair in JV Holiday tournament

Friday, December 31, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- The South Putnam JV girls' basketball team dropped a pair of games Thursday, hosting the girls' JV Eagle Holiday Tournament.

The Lady Eagles fell to Triton Central 36-18 in the opener of the three-team round robin tourney. They then fell to Rockville 32-25 in game two.

The day left coach Johnny Briones and his team some things to work on, but he couldn't question his team's hard work.

"Good effort," Briones said. "Real good effort."

He said the biggest struggle came in simply finding the hoop.

"Today what hurt us the most was our shooting," Briones said. "We had good looks but the ball wasn't going down for us."

Nikki York led the Eagles in the Triton Central game with five points, followed by Amanda Barnes, Aubrey Nichols and Brooke Cundiff with four each. In game two, Nichols led the way with 10 points, followed by Barnes with four.

Nichols collected 14 points over the two games to lead the way.

Briones said the team also struggled with blocking out and turning the ball over. However, he still liked certain things he saw.

"We did a good job today of getting the ball into the post," he said. "Both games were extremely aggressive, but our girls didn't back down. We played with a lot of heart and a lot of hustle."
