Fatal crash on I-65

This image was taken from the collision that occurred on I-65 Thursday morning, killing the driver of the semi-tractor.

INDIANAPOLIS -- On Thursday morning at 4:47 a.m., Indiana State Police responded to a two semi-tractor trailer crash on I-65 northbound at the 128 mile marker (at the Boone/Hendricks County line.)

Preliminary investigation revealed that Stephen Grogg, 32, of Clarksburg, W.V. was pulling a 2010 Freightliner and Wabash box trailer onto northbound I-65 from the emergency berm. The second driver, operating a semi-tractor trailer and two box trailers for Yellow Freight, was northbound on I-65 in the right lane and struck the rear of the Wabash box trailer.

The collision crushed the cab of the second semi-tractor and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hendricks County Coroner's Office.

A passenger in the sleeping berth of the 2010 Freightliner, John Herandez, 48, of Cross Plains, Callahan, Tex., was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for observation. Herandez did not suffer any life threatening injuries. Grogg was not injured.

Seatbelts were in use by both drivers, however due to the extremely violent nature of the crash the seatbelt was unable to keep the driver of the second semi-tractor from suffering fatal injuries.

The driver of the second semi-tractor that was killed in the crash has been identified as Steve Woosley, 60, of Warrensburg, Ill. The family has been notified.

ISP trooper Jonathon Caddell was the investigating officer, with Pike Township Fire Department, Hendricks County Coroner's Office and the Indiana Department of Transportation assisting him.
