Warriors swim away with victory on Tiger Cubs' senior night

GREENCASTLE -- Greencastle's girls' varsity swim team hosted the Lady Warriors of Danville -- from the Sagamore Conference -- in a dual meet this past Tuesday night.

There was some emotion in the air before the meet went under way as the team, coaches, and families celebrated senior night. GHS has three seniors on the team: Melanie Bittles, Shelby Gilbert and Sydney Terry.

After the meet, Greencastle head coach Luke Beasley talked about his seniors

"They show good leadership...and they mean a lot to the team and to me," Beasley said.

The Lady Tiger Cubs got off to a slow start allowing Danville to win the 200 medley relay as well as giving up individual wins in the 200 free and the 200 IM.

After the 50 free, the Lady Warriors were leading by a score of 39 to 23. However, The Tiger Cubs would rally and narrow the gap. They took first, second and third in diving, first and second in the 100 fly, and a first in the 100 free.

Senior Shelby Gilbert was the individual winner in diving, while senior Melanie Bittles won the 100 fly with teammate Rosio Gomez finishing in a close second in a personal best time of 1:10.67. Senior Sydney Terry won the 100 free with a personal best time of 33.73.

Despite the resilience of the team, they could not hold off the strong efforts of the Lady Warriors. The Lady Tiger cubs ended up losing the meet with a final score of 105 to 80.

The Lady Tiger Cubs will look to rebound from their loss, as they will be competing to defend their title as county champions this Thursday night. The meet will take place at South Putnam High School starting at 6 p.m.
