Pizza King reopens

GREENCASTLE -- Pizza King in Greencastle restaurant has reopened under new ownership.

Howard Thomas, one of the two new owners of the business, said the restaurant opened its doors Tuesday for a soft open, used to help prepare staff for how busy a business will be.

"When the previous owners opened in May of '09 they absolutely got slammed," Thomas said.

"We also had a very nice evening Tuesday," he said.

On Thursday, the Pizza King storefront was busy, with the entire small parking lot taken up and three or four people in the take-out area. Most of the dining room had people in it too.

Occasionally, people offered congratulations on opening the store up again. One woman said, "We missed you," while signing her check.

Matt Jordan, a Greencastle resident said he was happy to have Pizza King back.

"Yeah, it's been a long time," Jordan said. "This is my first time trying it tonight (since it reopened)."

Jordan said he heard about the business reopening from hearsay around town.

Thomas said it didn't take much work to open the old business -- just "cleaning it and a few minor things."

"It was basically turn key ready," he said.

Thomas said the business is returning Sue Watjen as manager and a large portion of the previous staff.

That doesn't mean Thomas and his silent partner, Gary Thomas aren't eyeing improvements.

"We're looking to apply for a beer and wine license," Howard Thomas said.

He also said they would be trying to add lunchtime service and improve the parking. Pizza King is currently open from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

  • Howard; If you don't clean it and demand it stay clean you might just close now. I will give it another try but over the past few years it has been sub-par and dirty.

  • It is amazing that people have nothing else better to do but complain. If you ask me Howard would be better off with not having some people as customers. Congratulations to Howard and Cheryl for taking this on!!!

  • i agree with K9....i work in a local restaurant as a manager with eleven years experience...anyone with a beard working with food is required to wear a beard guard (much like a hair net designed for facial hair) i do like beards but man cover that thing up!

  • i really like the pizza but cant stand the size or amount of pizza u get for $20. i could almost eat a large by myself. i think any normal man could!! i now remember why i rarely eat there. for $20 i got to get the big pizza from the niche (cloverdale) or humble pies xl. those pizzas last for 3 days not 3 minutes. but glad they are open again, i know the town loves them. good luck to the new owners!!!

  • I was glad to here new owners but disapointed to see same faces when I picked up my pizza! I have had pizza king pizza at other locations and love it ,but for some reason greencastles are greasy and dont compare to the trademark taste I get at other locations.

  • Greg needs to invest in a mach 3 or a weed eater if he is going to work around food! This picture is worth a thousand words. You can tell they are not serv safe certified.

  • I have worked around food for many years, and you might be surprised at what you find (and what passes the Board of Health) at many places, not just Pizza King.
