Harold D. "Bud" Surber, 87, Greencastle, passed away on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011.

He was born on April 15, 1923 in Emerson, Neb. to Loyd and Myrtle Ida Heckens Surber.

Bud served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, receiving six Bronze Stars. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greencastle and the American Legion and a life member of the V.F.W. and Lion's Club. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after more than 30 years of service.

His parents and wife Dorothy Surber preceded him in death.

Surviving are his children Beverly Costin of Greencastle and Mike Surber of Cicero; sister Harriett Hood of Greencastle; five grandchildren, Andy Costin and wife Lisa, Ron Costin, Kelly Cable and husband Lyle, Cassandra Surber and MacKenzie Surber; five great-grandchildren, Katie Jo, Lizzy, Dylan, Dustin and Samantha Costin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bud and his late wife Dorothy enjoyed square dancing and spending winters in Pharr, Texas. He enjoyed hummingbirds and learned how to play golf after his retirement.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Burial with honors will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
