Local swimmers eying sectional finals

Seniors Walter Chiarella of Greencastle and Jake Gould of South Putnam swim neck and neck in a heat race of the 100 breaststroke at Thursday's Crawfordsville Sectional prelims. Both swimmers will be in Saturday's championship race, with Chiarella seeded second and Gould seeded sixth.

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- Thursday night was the Boys' Swimming Sectional Prelims held at Crawfordsville High School. The Putnam County swim teams showed up with passion ready to take on the opposition. Between all three schools there are 22 finalists and 17 consolation finalists.

North Putnam Coach Wesley Richarson said, "I think we did really well tonight. I was really proud of everyone and their performance. And we had a couple of school records broken tonight."

South Putnam Coach Emily Karas felt the same way about her swimmers' performances. "We did really well overall. We have nine events coming back, four of those in the finals. My Medley went from seventh to third, my 200 free Relay went from ninth to fourth."

The meet started off with a bang. South Putnam and North Putnam relays finished in third and fifth places respectively, while Greencastle's relay was disqualified.

"Obviously the meet started off (in) the most disappointing (way). Things like this happen in sports and you just have to respond. All of our boys did a really good job of that. They took care of business the rest of the meet. They qualified where they needed to qualify," stated Greencastle coach Luke Beasley.

In the 200 freestyle North Putnam's Jeremy Ban finished with a time of 1:55.04 placing him in the finals with the fourth seed. North Putnam also had Colton Smith make the consolations of the 200 free along with Greencastle's Alex Asbell.

The county schools had an outstanding turnout in the 200 IM. Greencastle had two finalists. Walter Chiarella placed second with a time of 2:08.40, and Mitchell Ball placed third with a time of 2:09.19. Consolations include representatives from all three schools: Dane Gray from North Putnam, Jake Gould from South Putnam, and Cody Watson from Greencastle.

Greencastle has the top two finalists in the 50 freestyle in senior Jay Guffey and freshman Nash Firebaugh. Both swimmers had great performances. Guffey's qualifying time of 22.35 is under a half second from the state cut time.

After the diving break, Firebaugh came back and had a strong performance in the 100 butterfly finishing third with a time of 53.74. Mitchell Ball also placed in the finals of the butterfly finishing with the third seed. South Putnam's Matthew Lund is in the 100 butterfly consolation finals.

Greencastle and South Putnam had a very similar turnout in the 100 freestyle. The only difference is the consolation finals seed. Guffey of Greencastle won with a time of 49.93, and fellow senior Jesse Elkins is seeded third with a time of 51.40. South Putnam's Tayler Arnold finished in seventh place, the top seed of the consolation finals with a time of 53.66.

In the 500 freestyle, North Putnam's senior, Ban, placed third with a time of 5:28.51. Ban was the county's only representative in the 500's finals. All three Greencastle swimmers finished in the consolation finals of the 500.

The three schools will be swimming Saturday in the 200 free Relay. South Putnam and Greencastle will be in the finals, and North Putnam will be in the consolations. South Putnam, Greencastle, and North Putnam's seeds are fourth, sixth, and eleventh respectively.

The 100 backstroke will have a great showing from the Putnam County swim teams on Saturday. The finals will include one representative from each of the three schools and then Greencastle, along with North Putnam, will each have two swimmers in the consolation finals.

Karas noted that, "My freshman, Tayler Arnold, had a phenominal night. He is coming back in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. This is his first sectional meet and he swam so well. He had his best times in every one of his events. I am really proud of his performance tonight. " Tayler made it into the finals of the backstroke by about two seconds.

In the 100 breaststroke Greencastle senior Chiarella placed second with at time of 1:04.63. Joining him in the finals are Greencastle's Watson, and South Putnam's Jake Gould.

Karas said, "My senior Jake Gould is coming back as the sixth seed in the breaststroke. I am really happy for him. And his brother, Sam placed seventh and will swim in the consols."

Finishing out the night was the 400 freestyle relay. Greencastle is seeded third going into Saturday's finals with a time of 3:35.20, North Putnam's relay is seeded fourth with a time of 3:40.79, and South Putnam's relay is seeded ninth with a time of 3:57.44.

Saturday's swimming finals will start at 1 p.m. at the Crawfordsville High School Natatorium. Diving will have eight of eleven rounds Saturday morning starting at 9 a.m. The last three rounds will take place in the usual diving break.
