Bernsee named Banner editor

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

GREENCASTLE -- A familiar voice is back in the pages of the Banner Graphic.

Longtime editor Eric Bernsee took over his old position Monday morning after six years as the communications and public relations manager at Dixie Chopper.

Bernsee was originally the Banner editor from September 1975 to December 2004, working for three different owners -- Sarkes Tarzian, Elkhart Truth and Rust Publishing.

A native of the Chicago area and graduate of the University of Missouri, Bernsee has resided in Greencastle for more than three decades.

"This became home," he said. "Both of my daughters were born here and went to high school here. This is their home, so it's my home."

Bernsee's family includes his wife Ruth, daughters Kara and Nicole and stepchildren Emily and Sam Lowe.

As editor, Bernsee is focused on the challenges of balancing the printed and online editions of the newspaper.

"We are lucky in Greencastle and Putnam County to have a daily newspaper in a community this size," he said. "I want to do my best to assure that it continues to thrive and evolve. The physical newspaper and website have to work hand in hand."

"I look forward to having Eric as part of our team again," Banner Graphic general manager Daryl Taylor said. "His knowledge of Putnam County and its residents is exactly what a small town newspaper editor must have. And his love for the community makes for a great fit for the paper and Putnam County."

With prior experience covering the City of Greencastle, Bernsee will again assume the city beat in addition to the features, columns, photos, design and spot stories that are the lifeblood of any small town journalist.

His column "Daze Work" will appear again soon.

Bernsee can be reached at 653-5151 extension 24 or ebernsee@bannergraphic.com.

  • You know all those obnoxious, rude, or disrespectful comments we've seen online over the pass years, even those directed at Banner-Graphic mistakes - Those end up making the online banner-graphic irresistable to readers. Yes it makes some residents look ridiculous, and probably isn't good for the image of the city, but I imagine it drives up readership. Inevitably, the bad comments are exposed by subsequent reader comments, which helps balance it out. I just thought I add my 2 cents as the BG looks at the future of online/print. What is needed is the ability to comment on the "Opinion" pages (i.e Letters to the editor). Those people get to share ignorant comments without other readers getting the chance to share counterpoints online.

  • Welcome back Eric! My husband and I were sad when you left. We really missed your column. Hope you haven't lost your touch.

@ Light in the Dark: you can comment on the opinions page, it only takes a second to write a letter for the Banner to print, they just won't print hateful and hurtful things.

  • I guess I'm gonna have to rely on politics in the Indy Star for my entertainment in the absence of the usual Banner faux pas.

    Welcome back Eric.

  • Just curious if anyone knows what happened to Barrand.

Not that I am upset by this move whatsoever, has been a long time coming.
