Cloverdale may raise lunch prices

CLOVERDALE -- At a meeting of the Cloverdale school board Monday night received an update on a community learning center and Toni Tomlinson gave a presentation on the Knoy Resource Center at the meeting.

"We were one of 10 that were invited to represent 21 century community learning centers throughout the state to the legislators on March 1," she said. "It was a different time to be down at the state capital.

"One of the things that makes our program so unique is the administrative support we have at the elementary and middle school," Tomlinson said.

Tomlinson said the center made an underwater robot that placed fifth out of 31 entrees in a competition.

"It's hard to practice when you don't have a pool," Tomlinson said. "We experimented beforehand in a tank of water and did just fine."

Milner made the board aware of a potential lunch price increase.

"Right now the state reimburses free and reduced lunches at $2.98. Our lunch price for students is $2.30. They're asking us by July 1 to make sure our lunch prices are at least $2.98. We've worked hard to keep our lunch prices low," superintendent Carrie Milner said.

Milner said the corporation has the option of making up the difference in prices. She said she was frustrated in the level of involvement in determining the lunch pricing. No action from the board was required; Milner was bringing the issue to the board's attention.

Milner said that the board passed a surprise state pesticide audit.

Milner introduced a change of the school district's policy on drug tests to the board.

"We are able now to do a saliva screening instead of the usual urinalysis test, Milner said. "We're changing the language so we have options. It's a little less expensive and a little less invasive."

Since this was just an introduction of the proposed change, no vote was required.

The board accepted a $1,900 donation from a coalition to pay for drug tests.

Phoebe McDonald was named the student of the month for the elementary school, Seth Harrison for the middle school and Lindsay Robson for the high school.

  • The federal (not state) reimbursement prices for lunches, in this article, are totally wrong.
