Revised rank puts Putnam state's 12th healthiest county

One day after releasing County Health Rankings that listed Putnam County as the 11th healthiest county in the state, the announcing agencies have revised those rankings.

The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which released the figures, rate overall health for every county in all 50 states by using a standard formula to measure how healthy people are and how long they live.

In its updated rating of 12th overall among Indiana's 92 counties, Putnam County ranked 20th in health behaviors, 31st in health factors, 35th in social and economic factors, 42nd in clinical care and 86th in physical environment.

Among some of the more interesting figures in the study, Putnam County recorded:

-- A 29 percent adult obesity rate (30 percent is the state average).

-- A 24 percent adult smoking rate (25 percent is the state norm).

-- A 10 percent binge-drinking rate (16 percent is the state average).

-- A 23 percent single-parent household rate (31percent is the state average).

-- A 25 percent access to healthy food rate (58 percent is the state norm).

-- A 15 percent uninsured adult rate (exactly the state norm).

-- A 75 percent high school graduation rate (74 percent is state average).

In a press release issued Wednesday, the organizations inadvertently used 2010 figures for Indiana counties.
