South Putnam gets rid of trash
The South Putnam School Corporation has an old candy bar vending machine in its storage area. Now they can finally get rid of it.
The school board voted to move the old machine to the surplus equipment category during their monthly meeting Monday night, effectively allowing them to dispose of the machine in whatever way they see fit. The board would like to see the machine recycled, possibly for profit.
"It's been sitting back there and is of no value," said Superintendent Bruce Bernhardt.
After this brief bit of business, Bernhardt mentioned several coming events to the board. Bernhardt also congratulated fourth grader Addison Hughes on his performance in Terre Haute at the Wabash Valley Regional Spelling Bee. Hughes will be competing in the national spelling bee in Washington D.C. on June 1.
"Fantastic achievement for a South Putnam student," Bernhardt said. "We wish him the best of luck in representing our school."
Bernhardt also talked about the upcoming end of the school year, encouraging students and parents to continue to push and perform strongly through the last six weeks of the school year.
"There's a lot of distractions for students and adults," Bernhardt said. "But it's important to bear down and finish strong."
This is especially true with the second round of ISTEP testing beginning on April 25. The multiple-choice section of the test will be taken in two different ways. Some grade levels will take the test by hand, while others will be taking the test online. The school's computers and servers should be able to handle the influx of students during the testing time, Bernhardt said.
Bernhardt encouraged students attending this year's prom festivities, which take place at Dixie Chopper Convention Center on Saturday, April 30, to be safe and make good decisions.
"We hope all the students make good decisions, good choices," Bernhardt said.
