Cloverdale track gets wins over North Central

CLOVERDALE -- Threats of rain and storms casted doubt over the possibility of running a track meet Tuesday night, but clouds and wind were the only factors when Cloverdale hosted North Central in a dual meet.

With a chance to run in dry conditions, the Clovers and Lady Clovers were victorious by wide margins. The boys won 97-29 and the girls won 89-33.

For head coach Andrew Tyler's boys' squad all but three events resulted with Clovers taking first place. Tyler said the performance was needed after the previous meet at Edgewood which left the team a little discouraged.

"A lot of the guys felt pretty defeated after that so having something like this should be a little pick-me-up for the team," he said.

Jordan Smith earned a first place finish in the 1,600-meter run and his second-place time of 11:20.44 in the 3,200 scored a personal best for him. Jeff Couse finished first place in the 100 and finished second to Donovan Scisney in the long jump. The two jumped only an inch apart with Scisney hitting 18-6.

Cody Stout and Seth Jonte dominated the field events both finishing in the top two in both events. Stout won the discus while Jonte won the shot put. The Clovers won all three relays with North Central not participating in the 3,200 or 1,600 relays.

Despite the one-sided meet, Tyler said his team was able to push themselves because winning means a number of things in track. He said athletes can win the event, score points for their team with a high finish, or set a personal best.

"That's how we come in every meet," he said. "We talk about those things and the guys come out and perform."

On the girls' side, head coach Susan Jordan admitted her team was holding back a little with a big meet against Cascade and Tri-West on the horizon Thursday. The Lady Clovers still finished first in every event but two.

Four girls won multiple events for Cloverdale. Paige Gruener earned victories in the 100 and long jump, while Mariah Oetken placed first in the 400 and high jump. Amilia Nally finished first in the 800 and 1,600, and Brooke Gray won the 100 hurdles and the discus.

Jordan said her team wasn't too concerned by the threat of rain because her team almost always practices if it's raining. She said the wind bothered them more than anything.

However, Jordan said she hoped the days of rain would end so her team could get better practice, especially hurdlers like Gray and Sydney Shrum. Jordan doesn't let her team practice in spikes, so the wet weather causing a lot of slipping in tennis shoes.

"We can't do a lot of hurdle work (when it's raining)," Jordan said. "My hurdle girls are good. But they want to be the best and that's hard to do with all this rain."
