James W. Hipps, 90, Cloverdale, passed away on May 9, 2011 at The Waters of Greencastle.

He was born on April 10, 1921 in Morganton, N.C. and was the son of the late George Marion and Emma (Branch) Hipps.

He was married to Mildred L. Nees Hipps on Sept. 8, 1944, and she preceded him in death on April 10, 2007.

He was a farmer and a retired mechanic for Lone Star Cement in Greencastle. He was a member of the Cloverdale Church of The Nazarene and had participated in the Cloverdale Main Street Farmers Market for several years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army.

He is survived by his children, Mary Ann Barrett and husband Wendall of Indianapolis, Sharon Freeman and husband Ronald A. of Cloverdale, Robert James Hipps and wife Barbara of Platte City, Mo. and George Hipps and wife Joyce of Quincy; his sister, Maddie Edwards and husband Grady of Shelby, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by several sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale, with Rev. Ross Kirkman officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Cloverdale Cemetery.
