Photo taken at local ATM machine shows possible suspect in debit card theft case.

CLOVERDALE -- A motorist who abandoned his car on Interstate 70 last week has had a double dose of bad luck.

Not only was his car, a maroon 1988 Oldsmobile Regency, impounded and towed to Cloverdale, but his wallet and MasterCard debit card were then reportedly stolen from the glove box of the vehicle.

Police said the debit card was stolen sometime between the morning of May 31 and the early evening of June 1 while the Oldsmobile was parked in an impound lot.

After the debit card was taken from the impounded car, it was used at various ATMs in Cloverdale and Greencastle and for an online purchase, leading to a loss of $640 from the victim's accounts.

Police have not identified the victim or disclosed his hometown.

However, authorities do have a possible suspect -- a young male with short-cropped hair -- who was caught on a camera at one of the ATMs at which the card was used.

According to Indiana State Police at Putnamville, the car had been abandoned near the 30-mile marker of westbound I-70 and was taken to Discount Tire Service in Cloverdale, where it stored inside a fence in a secured impound lot.

Anyone with information concerning this case or the possible suspect is asked to contact Indiana State Police Det. Jim Dungan at 653-4114 or 1-800-225-8576.

  • how does someone use a card at a atm without knowing a pin #, sounds fishy to me.

  • Some people write their PIN on the card so they don't forget it.

  • Who watchin the impound lot? This is a police impound lot or third party or private property? Someone must have an access roster.

  • If you A) leave your wallet and debit card in an abandoned car and B) write your pin number on the card, what do expect to happen? What an idiot.

  • While I feel bad for him, at the same time, I have to agree with the above. You left your wallet inside of an abandoned car.
