BCB to 'play on' Sunday night

Saturday, June 11, 2011

BRAZIL -- The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, will present "And the Band Played on" Sunday, June 12 at 8 p.m. at the Forest Park bandshell, or pavilion if rain.

A new awning and fresh coat of paint grace the Forest Park bandshell, built in 1937 for the 154-year-old Brazil Concert Band (BCB).

Providing more comfortable seating for the audience are 200 new plastic park benches that have been added.

Each week, the BCB will play music observing the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. This week the band will perform songs dear to Northern and Southern soldiers in "Memories of Stephen Foster." Between 1861 and 1865 musicians from the BCB served the Union during the Civil War.

Janelle Huber, piccolo, ISU School of Music senior will join her brother John Huber, ISU music school graduate and euphonium player, in "The Elephant and the Fly" by Kling. The Hubers performed this work during Janelle's flute recital at ISU earlier this spring.

March selections for the week are "The American Red Cross" by Panella, "El Caballero" by Olivadoti and "The Federal March" by Sousa.

Classic television themes will take the audience back to the 1960s in Jennings' "A Symphony of Sitcoms."

"Good Old Days Sing-A-Long" by Ployhar will conjure up the '90s -- that is the 1890s -- with songs of a bygone era.

A pair of Washington, D.C., tunes are also scheduled, "The Grand Promenade at the White House" by Sousa and "Galop from Genevieve de Brabant" from which "The Marines' Hymn" came edited by Col. John R. Bourgeois, retired director of the Marine Band.
