Jinsie receives Foundation's Spirit of Philanthropy Award
Jinsie Bingham received the Spirit of Philanthropy Award at the annual meeting and dinner celebration of the Putnam County Community Foundation Wednesday evening.
The award is the highest honor bestowed by the board members of the Community Foundation and recognizes outstanding philanthropic achievement within the Putnam County community.
"She has been a tireless volunteer at the Foundation," said Vicki Timm, president of the Community Foundation. "Jinsie has had a hand in developing and sustaining major organizations in this community, and while she has already received numerous awards for her contributions she is not resting on her laurels; there is too much work to do!"
Bingham has served as president of the Foundation, Greencastle Business and Professional Women, Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Greencastle, Putnam County Historical Society, Putnam County Museum, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and Greencastle Rotary Club, the first woman elected to that position in the latter organization.
In 1977, Bingham became the first woman to own and operate a radio station in Indiana in WJNZ (now WREB) in Greencastle. She is member of the Indiana Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame.
In addition to her leadership in local non-profit organizations, Bingham has served as president of the Indiana Chapter of American Women in Radio and TV, vice president for FM of the Indiana Broadcasters Association, and vice president and treasurer of the West Central Indiana Economic Development District.
She currently sits on the Greencastle City Council and the Putnam County Museum Board.
"She has been an inspiration and mentor to so many women and has given so much of her life to weaving the fabric of our community," Timm said. "It is hard to imagine what our community would look like without her energy and passion."
The Community Foundation is a public charity established in 1985 to serve donors, award grants and conduct community development to enrich the quality of life in Putnam County.
