A 20-year-old Poland man was arrested on theft charges early Wednesday, Greencastle City Police reported.

Wayne F. Burk was lodged in the Putnam County Jail after Capt. Mike Hanlon stopped his vehicle on Arlington Street and reportedly found the suspect in possession of stolen property.

Officer Hanlon said he spotted the Burk vehicle in an alleyway off Arlington Street about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday and followed the vehicle.

In the meantime, Officer Albert Epple drove past the location and informed Hanlon that an air-conditioning unit had been offered for sale on the property of Doug McCoy.

The 25,000 Btu Whirlpool window unit was reportedly removed from the property along with a red dolly with two flat wheels.

The equipment was valued at approximately $300.

Three local teenagers were cited for illegal consumption of alcohol by minors after Officer Matt Huffman stopped their vehicle on Hanna Street at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Cited were Jacob Alexander, 18, Greencastle, a 17-year-old Reelsville female and a 17-year-old Greencastle female.

Three recent traffic accidents were investigated by city officers.

-- At 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, a two-car accident was reported at North Indiana and Jacob streets.

Officer Hanlon reported that fellow GPD Officer Eric Vaughan, 30, Greencastle, was northbound on Indiana in his private vehicle, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, when it was struck from behind by a 1992 Ford Taurus, driven by Charles Wood III, 33, Greencastle.

Wood told police he looked down to change the station on his car radio and did not see the Vaughan car had stopped at the stopsign. Impact reportedly pushed the Vaughan vehicle completely across the intersection.

Wood was taken to Putnam County Hospital via Operation Life ambulance with a head abrasion.

Total damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

At 2:43 p.m. June 12, a two-car mishap occurred on Indiana Street, 100 feet south of Franklin Street as Vernon Hendrickson, 55, Greencastle, stopped his 1997 Buick to let out a passenger and a 2010 Ford Focus, driven by Donald Avery, 72, Bloomington, backed into the side of the Buick.

The Hendrickson car passenger, Shelly Parks, 41, Greencastle, complained of pain to her right side.

Hendrickson was ticketed by Chief Tom Sutherlin for an expired license plate.

Total damage was listed at $750-$1,000.

At 6:18 p.m. June 11, a two-vehicle accident was reported at Arlington and East Walnut streets.

Officer Ed Wilson said Florence Dockery, 84, Greencastle, was westbound on Walnut Street and reportedly disregarded a stopsign, which allowed her 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix to strike a southbound 2005 Dodge Ram, driven by Mark Shepherd, 29, Greencastle.

Total damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

One recent traffic citation was issued by city officers.

At 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Michael E. Williams, 21, Greencastle, was stopped by Reserve Officer Kyle Lee on Tennessee Street for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.
