Putnam motorcyclist arrested for fleeing police at 100 mph

MT. MERIDIAN -- A Putnam County man allegedly fled Indiana State Police at speeds near 100 mph on a motorcycle Saturday before he gave himself up, Indiana State Police at the Putnamville Post report.

While working the federal overtime project C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) Saturday afternoon on U.S. 40 near Mt. Meridian, State Police Sgt. Cory Robinson clocked a speeding westbound motorcycle in excess of 70 mph.

Robinson's radar showed the motorcycle to be traveling at 73 mph near County Road 300 East.

As Sgt. Robinson attempted to stop the motorcycle, the driver, Cody L. Cox, 24, Greencastle, turned the 1995 Yamaha northbound on CR 525E and then eastbound on CR 300 South.

As the motorcycle reached speeds near 100 mph while eastbound on 300 South, Sgt. Robinson briefly lost sight of the vehicle and began to check nearby driveways hidden by a thick tree line in a rural area of Marion Township.

The trooper spotted the Yamaha in one of the driveways, but initially did not see Cox. Moments later, however, the driver exited an adjacent wooded area where he was apparently hiding. He voluntarily surrendered.

Cox was taken into custody following the 1 p.m. incident. He was incarcerated in the Putnam County Jail.

The Greencastle man was preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement with a motor vehicle, a class D felony, and reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor.

Cox also was issued traffic citations for speeding and for not having a valid motorcycle license.
