School still waiting on Deer Meadow roof answers

Friday, July 15, 2011

More questions than answers remain in the problems with Deer Meadow Primary School's leaking roof.

The Greencastle School Board heard from Assistant Superintendent Dawn Puckett and Maintenance Director Dan Green on the issue at Wednesday's monthly meeting.

Crews were scheduled to come to the school on Thursday to cover the damaged areas with plastic sheeting as well as take samples of the damaged shingles.

The shingles will be sent in for testing to determine the cause of the wear.

Bill Payne of Fanning and Howey, the architectural firm that designed the building, admitted at June's meeting that damage around the roof's valleys and expansion joints was the result of design flaws. However, they have not taken responsibility for damage to other shingles.

Fanning and Howey has actually requested the school corporation foot the bill for the replacement of shingles in the upper part of the roof valleys if no damage is found in these areas.

No GCSC officials seemed interested in this offer.

With the issues of liability still up in the air, the project is not moving forward at this time. Asked by board president Bruce Stinebrickner if there was hope of the roof being fixed by the beginning of the school year, Maintenance Director Green expressed little confidence.

The board voted on officers at the meeting, keeping things largely the same. Stinebrickner will remain president, with Kelly Lewis as vice president and Mike Dean as secretary.

Meetings will continue to be at 7:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in the Deer Meadow Primary School cafeteria.

Nancy Marlow was reappointed as the corporation treasurer, but will be retiring from that post on July 31. The board also appointed Marlow the interim treasurer from the beginning of August until a permanent successor is chosen.
