Putnam Rise to help lower utility bills

Looking to help residents save as much as 30 percent on their home energy bills, Putnam RISE is seeking applications from households with annual incomes of less than $45,000.

These energy bill savings are possible through the Putnam RISE weatherization effort. RISE works with Roachdale's Bill Mentgen, a trained technician, who recommends energy efficiency, health and safety improvements that are then paid for with project grant dollars.

Applications and referrals are encouraged by calling 720-7610, going online at www.putnamrise.org/homes/weatherization/ or by visiting one of the Bainbridge Town Hall, Greencastle City Hall or the Putnam County Senior Center.

From the applications received by Sept. 1, 21 homes will be selected for these utility bill-saving projects. One of the 21 homes will receive a "Green Home Makeover," including $10,000 in upgrades in addition to four energy-efficient appliances from Shuee & Sons Best Buys.

The Putnam RISE weatherization effort is led by Cathryn Ensley and Wes Kendall.

Putnam RISE (Renewal, Investment, Savings and Efficiency) is a yearlong initiative bringing energy savings and investments to schools, homes, and businesses throughout Putnam County.

The March-April Putnam RISE Energy Challenge helped local school corporations save as much as 20 percent on energy bills, earning a visit and praise from U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar.

RISE also includes a "Buy Local Bucks" incentive for energy efficiency-related purchases and an Energy Savings Pledge that more than 1,400 Putnam County households have completed since Feb. 1.
