Historic Greencastle neighborhoods to be honored at State Fair

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Greencastle's three newest historic neighborhoods will be honored at the Indiana State Fair next month.

Indiana properties that have been placed on the State and National historic registers since April 2010 will be feted by the DNR Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA) on Aug. 11.

That day has been designated Hoosier Heritage Day at the State Fair.

Among the honorees will be the three newly designated Greencastle historic neighborhoods -- the Eastern Enlargement, Old Greencastle and Northwood Addition.

Greencastle's Eastern Enlargement, as the name suggests, is the area east and south of the downtown. Encompassing many of the most historic homes within the friendly confines of Greencastle, it is essentially bounded by East Franklin Street on the north, Wood Street on the east, Anderson Street on the south and College Avenue on the west.

Old Greencastle is the area west of the courthouse square, roughly bounded by West Poplar Street on the south, Gillespie Street on the west, West Liberty Street on the north and Market Street on the east.

Northwood is the area north of Franklin Street and south of Shadowlawn Avenue between (and including) Northwood Boulevard and North Arlington Street.

The Eastern Enlargement, Old Greencastle and Northwood all have been designated historic districts by the state. The first two also have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, while the Northwood Addition remains under consideration for inclusion in the national listing by the National Park Service/U.S. Department of the Interior.

In addition to the three Greencastle areas, properties in the following cities are to be recognized at the State Fair: Angola, Bruceville, Crown Point, Edinburgh, Fort Wayne, Goshen, Hammond, Indianapolis, Lowell, Merrillville, Monticello, Munster, New Albany, Plymouth, Seymour, Syracuse, Valparaiso, Wabash and Winchester.

The 1 p.m. ceremony will take place at the DNR amphitheater, an outdoor facility on the state fairgrounds.
