Eagles win on fifth card over Southmont

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

South Putnam's girls' golf squad kept the momentum from the WCC match Saturday going Monday as they knocked off Southmont on a tiebreaker Monday night.

Both squads came in with a score of 210 at the Oak Ridge Golf Course and went to the fifth scorecards, where Sarah Woodworth's 57 was enough to earn the victory.

At the opening match for South Putnam, the Eagle Invite in August, Southmont was 46 stroked better than the hosts over 18 holes.

With Monday night being senior night for sole senior Jessie McKean, the result was far different.

The Mounties' had the top two scorers in Caitlyn Isenberg and Chelsey Smity, who shot 42 and 48 respectively.

The Eagles, however, had a more balanced approach on the day, paced by Caitlyn Boyce's 49. Senior Jessie McKean, at her last home match, shot 52, with Kyndra Boyce coming in at 53 and Madison Cash shooting 56.

Tied at 210 through the first four cards, the tiebreak went to the hosts as Woodworth's 57 was seven better than Natalie Brann's 64.

The win kept things moving in the right direction for the Eagles and head coach Brian McClure.

"Southmont's a good team. They beat us pretty good earlier in the year. It was nice to turn it around and get a good win tonight," McClure said.

With a final tune-up Tuesday at Tri-West, the Eagles look to keep their place from the WCC match at the Putnam County Match Thursday and Sectional Saturday. McClure said he was sure that the team is ready for the home stretch.

"We are headed in the right direction. We've got the two biggest meets of the year coming up and we're playing some pretty good golf so hopefully we can keep it up."
