PCPL to participate in Oct. 8 Observe the Moon Night

Saturday, October 1, 2011

Putnam County Public Library, with the assistance of Dr. Mary Kertzman, professor of physics and astronomy at DePauw University, will participate in International Observe the Moon Night on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Starting at 6 p.m., a variety of activities for people of all ages will be offered. International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide celebration of our nearest neighbor, the moon.

Each year in the fall, millions of people from across the globe come together to view the moon and learn about its diverse roles in culture, history, science and exploration.

The Putnam County Public Library applied for and received a kit created by the InOMN Team which was funded by NASA's Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate.

The kit contained a set of sturdy binoculars, a tripod for steadying the binoculars, a selection of children's books, a mini Moon globe and a binder of information and activity ideas for parents to explore with their children.

The Putnam County Library's schedule is:

6 p.m. -- Star Lab portable planetarium opens. Fall sky shows at 6:15 and 6:45, in the Children's Library.

6:30 p.m. -- Story time and activities.

7:30 p.m. -- Presentation on lunar exploration by Dr. Mary Kertzman in the Kiwanis Room.

8-9:30 p.m. -- McKim Observatory (DePauw Avenue) open for moon viewing, weather permitting. Binoculars and a portable telescope will also be available for moon viewing in the library parking lot.
