North Putnam soccer falls in first round of sectional

WEST TERRE HAUTE -- The North Putnam boys' soccer team lost its opening round of Class A West Vigo Sectional 3-0 to Covington last week.

North Putnam head coach Dave Moeller said the team had a chance to strike early as Zane Hunter tried to capitalize on a defensive miscue, but wasn't able to score on the break away.

Keeper Zach Green saved Covington's first game, but he wasn't able to control the ball and Covington was able to tap it in for the score. They added another score to lead the Cougars 2-0 at the break.

In the second half, Covington added its third and final goal of the night, while North Putnam was trying to get some goal scoring going of their own. Stephen Freund, Taylor Zaring and Green all had great shots on goal, but weren't able to get one in the net.

"I think we started the game a little sluggish and that might have been because of the long drive," Moeller said. "I think there might have been a different outcome if Hunter could have converted that break away in the first half.

"Covington played better than us and deserved to win," Moeller added.

The Cougars finish the season 2-13 and 0-3 in WCC play.
