Stray animal issues no excuse for cruelty

To the Editor:

Saturday, my husband and I buried Angel and Hope. I don't know where they were born, when they were born, if they were siblings, what their favorite thing to play with was or even what their names really were. I know nothing about their life. I only know about their death.

Angel was a cute little calico girl and Hope was a pretty black and white kitty. They looked like they were about five months old ... hardly old enough to have even experienced much in life.

They were placed in a tied black trash bag on a hot day, thrown out by the side of the road like garbage. I am sure that most people who saw the bag thought exactly that, someone has thrown out their trash again.

I can't explain my strong urge to check the bag. It just didn't look "right" to me. When I opened it and saw Angel and Hope I was beyond devastated. These little lives ended in a horrible, tragic way because the person who was supposed to take care of them was a coward.

To the person (or people) who did this: Have you ever been hurt and not been able to breathe knowing that no one can hear you and help you? Have you ever felt that hopeless and terrified? I pray that you don't have children and other animals and that one day you will realize what a horrible cowardly person you are.

I am very aware of the stray cat problem in this county but to do something like this is inexcusable and unforgivable. Turning them loose or dumping them is cruel but not nearly as cruel as what happened to Angel and Hope.

I called the police dispatch and was told there was nothing they could do. A little part of me understands since there were no actual witnesses. However, another part of me is furious that this kind of indifference to animals by some people and "authorities" in this county continues and seems to be, sickeningly, ok with some people.

The person who did this to Angel and Hope will probably never be punished in this lifetime ... but what about the others? What about the cruelty and neglect that happens in this county on a daily basis? People are getting away with it, so it continues. Remember this when you vote, when you choose who your leaders are and when you support and praise those that do nothing to change the reality of what is happening.
