Melvin H. Mangus, 79, Greencastle, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 21, 2011 at Asbury Towers after a long battle with cancer and Alzheimer's disease

He was the long-time owner-operator of Mel's Wrecker Service as well as several service stations in Greencastle.

He was a former deputy sheriff with the Putnam County Sheriff's Department as well as a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

He was born on Feb. 20, 1932, the son of Hugh S. and Minnie M. (Garrett) Mangus.

He married Freda C. Smith on May 21, 1955 and she preceded him in death on May 28, 1986.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lilly in November 1963; his parents, brothers Arthur, Donald, and Dallas; and a sister, Lucille Hunter.

He is survived by his son Jeffrey of Greencastle, sisters Melba Sanders (Fred) of Greencastle, Mavis Cole of New Castle, Wilma Lowry (James) and Irene Cole of Albuquerque, N.M., and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Fillmore Cemetery, with Rev. Paul Bowen officiating.

Services have been entrusted to Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencasstle.
