Street party coming to the square this Saturday

Thursday, October 27, 2011

In an effort to attract DePauw University students away from campus into the community, a street party is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29 from noon-3 p.m. on Franklin Street on the courthouse square.

The party is free to all participants and will include food from local restaurants as well as live music.

The street party was created by a group of DePauw students, Brad Shewalter, LiQiang Ye, Huyen Nguyen and Minh Ly, as part of their Management Fellows program, which requires them to create a project that benefits DePauw's campus as well as the Greencastle community.

"We decided to do something more active," Shewalter said. "One of the focuses is eating great food as well as checking out what types of business are around."

The event has little funding so the group is forced to rely on donations and what little money it does have to create a successful event. However, the group has managed to cover DePauw's campus with flyers to promote the event.

"We're doing this as cheap as we can," Shewalter said. "I really think we can appeal to the students."

The group has spent the past month planning and preparing for the party this weekend by talking to members of the community. Receiving support from both Mayor Sue Murray and the Greencastle City Council, they truly believe this event will be a success.

"The major focus of the project is to bring more students to the downtown," Shewalter said. "It's a chance to bring the students and the community together."

Food will be available for purchase from Almost Home, Blue Door Café and Treasures on the Square. There also will be local vendors set up around the square.

Although, the group will have to create two more events this year, this is the only event that will be located outdoors due to the weather.

All events will have to focus on bringing students and the community together.
