A field fire occurred in Washington Township on Wednesday afternoon. Several fire departments responded to the call which took nearly 10,000 gallons to put out.

A field fire in Washington Township Wednesday occurred on County Road 550 West between Big Walnut Church and Huffman Covered Bridge. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Reelsville, Madison Township, Poland, Jackson Township, Van Buren Township, State Farm, Cloverdale Township and Greencastle fire departments responded to the fire, which was called in at 1:30 p.m.

"This fire spread 20-25 acres quickly because of the wind," said Reelsville Fire Chief John McPherson. "It can get away from you quick."

Crews stayed on scene until 4:40 p.m. and used roughly 10,000 gallons of water. It is believed that the fire started with around 10 acres but due to high winds spread to nearly 25.

McPherson advises the community to call dispatch before doing any burning, especially in dry conditions. The department offers a service to watch and maintain a fire to anyone with a large area to burn.
