Charles E. Evans, age 83, of Greencastle, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 at Asbury Towers.

Born Oct. 27, 1928 in Cloverdale, he was the son of Russell and Lucille (Whitley) Firestone and a 1946 graduate of Bainbridge High School.

He married Mary C. (Grielbauler) Evans on Aug. 9, 1949 and she survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the 11th Army Airborne as a paratrooper.

Charles was a safety engineer with IBM Corp. for 33 years, retiring in 1986. He then went to work for FB Distro; for B & R and the City of Greencastle as a building and fire extinguisher inspector; worked maintenance for the Windy Hill Country Club; and Cottage Gardens, Bainbridge.

A charter member and founder of the Bainbridge Fire Department for 20 years, and had served as chief for 13 years. He was a member of the 11th Army Airborne Division Assn.; American Legion; Moose Lodge and the VFW. He was an avid Jeff Gordon and NASCAR fan.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Evans; children, Russell (Vicki) Evans of Greencastle, Pamela (Steven Stein) Evans of Wilmington, N.C., and Robert (Beth) Evans of Lugoff, S.C.; five grandchildren, Russell (Shiloh) Evans Jr., Jennifer Evans, both of Greencastle, Katelyn and Lee Evans of Lugoff, S.C., and Julie (Sam) Randall of Wilmington, N.C.; six great-grandchildren, Dalton Evans, Jay and Josh Derringer, Emma Evans, and Sam and Luke Randall; and special cousins, Mitzi Hall, Cathy Richardson and Shelby Richardson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Jim Staggers officiating. Interment will follow with military rites at Union Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until time of service on Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Bainbridge Fire Department, the Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Assn.
