More than 'E' for effort

Monday, November 28, 2011
Next time you gripe about having to parallel park your persnickety pickup or Peugeot, you might want to consider what this poor semi driver must attempt. Having to stop traffic on U.S. 231 (Bloomington Street), he must back his rig to near jackknife contortions just to maneuver into the front entrance for a delivery at Robe-Ann Park in Greencastle. "E" is easily for effective and efficient here as the trucker fortunately finds traffic at a minimum on this morning.

  • yes these arent easy to drive as it is, and parallel parking one is a royal pain in the (you know where) and this is a day cab, think if it was a sleeper

  • NOT exactly related to this story...BUT, Semi trucks making turns in Greencastle...Washington & Bloomington, Washington & Indiana and Washington & Jackson intersections are scarey! At present most semi trucks obey the speed limit on city streets. BUT many of the dump trucks, pick-ups & passenger vehicles DO SPEED! Why not use Jackson Street...a straight street with easy turns on & off the Southern Highway, 231 & 240. The large semi trucks might slow traffic to within the speed limit.

  • When the Veterans' Highway was originally built, large truck traffic on Jackson St was discouraged. I know some drivers use it now, but years ago they would have been issued a ticket. Many local drivers remember this, and don't use Jackson St to this day.

  • Clovertucky is correct...it is not a INDOT truck route. When big trucks use 231 the turns are wicked, some trucks get caught blocking a whole intersection (going south making left turn from Jackson to go east on Washington) because they don't realize the "rig won't fit" when a red stop light causes a back-up.

  • If the park board ordered something that required a truck of this size to deliver, why didn't the elect to have the carrier deliver it to city hall or any of the city's other properties better suited for such traffic?

  • Freight is delivered to the customer that ordered it, miraclemom3.
