Putnam County represented by 58 athletes on All-WCC list
The West Central Conference has announced its 2011 selections. Putnam County was well represented across the board. Putnam County schools were WCC champions in four sports.
Greencastle boys' cross country won the conference meet with a total of 24 points. Senior Ryan Stevens led the Tiger Cubs with a second place finish with a time of 16:52, with Tyler Hudson finished fourth. GHS sweep sixth through 10th, with Nathan Eubank (17:26) finishing sixth, Elijah Brattain (17:29) in seventh, Paul Bryant (17:37) in eighth, Taylor Secrest (17:44) in ninth and Hunter Mitchell (17:51) in 10th.
Greencastle also took conference honors in cross country with a tally of just 19 points. The Tiger Cubs swept the first three positions, with Colleen Weatherford placing first with a time of 20:02. She was followed by Emily Gill (21:07) in second and Kayla Cash (21:23) in third. Paige Pickens (22:01) was sixth and Alex Stoffregen (22:25) was eighth.
South Putnam's Mallory Glaze finished fourth in a time of 21:34 and Cloverdale's Claudia Monnett was fifth in a time of 21:52.
In girls' golf, South Putnam was the top finishing team, placing third with a score of 428. Cascade won the WCC with a 382 and Monrovia was second with 400.
Cloverdale's Victoria Boyette was the county top finisher at the conference meet with an 86. Greencastle's Katie Hedge was fourth with an 89 and Cloverdale's Sydney Shrum was fifth with a 92. South Putnam's Caitlyn Boyce edged Greencastle's Jessie Bennett for eighth place. Both golfers shot rounds of 100. North Putnam's Ellen Wilborn rounded out the country golfers with a score of 103.
Nineteen area football players earned All-WCC status in 2011. Greencastle, North Putnam and South Putnam all had nine selections, with Cloverdale adding one. North Putnam won conference with a perfect 5-0 record.
For Greencastle, Levi App, Ryan Battin, Nick Gilliam, Ben Hesler, Derek Lenihan and Mac Shuee were honored. Making the squad from North Putnam was Nate Bryan, Kolten Everts, Hunter Logan, Tyler Shorter, Jake Smerage and Hank Spencer.
Rob Gibson, Justin Bumgardner, Ryan Chestnut, Wade Custis, Cody Heller and Zach Smith represented South Putnam. Jordan Brinkman earned All-WCC status for Cloverdale.
Greencastle boys' soccer took conference honors by posting a perfect 3-0 record. Mitchell Ball, Sonney Basham, Jon Good and Brandon Query represented it on the All-Conference team. North Putnam's Stephen Freund and Ryan Raup were also named.
The Greencastle girls' soccer team placed second in conference to lead the county. Sarah Beams, GHS players Mackenzie Meyer and Sydney Secrest were named All-Conference. North Putnam's Maggie Pinney, Cayla Kientz and Lydia Volland were also honored.
Cloverdale's volleyball team finished third in the conference with a record of 3-2, behind Cascade (5-0) and Monrovia (4-1).
Cloverdale led the All-Conference selections with three, followed by North Putnam, Greencastle and South Putnam with one each.
Cloverdale's Mariah Oetken, Bristy Skiles and Bradanne Toney were named to the squad. Greencastle's Rayleigh Amis, North Putnam's Kallie Brattain and South Putnam's Brooke Boetjer were also named.
In total, 58 Putnam County athletes were honored as All-Conference.
