South Putnam swimmers cruise past Vikings
South Putnam's swim teams cruised to victory Thursday night over West Vigo. South's girls won 110-44 over the Vikings, with the boys winning by a tally of 115-43.
The Eagles had multiple first place finishers on both sides. Kaelynn Cox won the 200 free and 100 back, Josalynn Farmer took the 50 and 100 free races, Lyndsie Beasley won the 200 IM, Mackenzie Trisler won the 100 fly, Morgan Deszi took first in the 500 free and Courtney Sullivan won the diving portion.
South's girls also won the three relays, with Deszi, Farmer, Beasley and Katie Kiste winning the 200 medley relay, Cox, Beasley, Farmer and Katie Shaw winning the 200 free relay, and Shaw, Deszi, Cox and Ashley Wilson securing the 400 free relay.
The boys' had wins from Matt Lund in the 50 free and 100 fly, Sam Gould in the diving competition and 100 breast, Tayler Arnold in the 200 IM and 100 back, Ben Albright in the 200 free and Zeke Evens in the 500 free.
The boys' also won two of the relays. Arnold, Gould, Lund and Avery Dotson won the 200 medley relay with Arnold, Gould, Albright and Lund winning the 200 free relay.
South Putnam head coach Matthew Edwards said even with several swimmers out for the meet, times were good for those swimming Thursday night.
"We're glad to see West Vigo come out. They put up a great fight. They had a down roster tonight, but they've got a lot of good swimmers and we'll see them here soon for the Eagle Relays," Edwards said.
"We've had several out with illnesses, so our numbers were down tonight, too. A lot of swimmers had to swim events they weren't necessarily comfortable with, but they did a great job of making these events their own.
"We had time drops pretty much across the board, and that's what we wanted. In almost every event, we shaved some time off or were right where we need to be," Edwards added.
South travels to Fountain Central on Saturday. Edwards said it would be weird for him to be at the pool where he swam in high school, but another chance for good times from his squads.
"We've got practice tomorrow to work on some things. It's hard to get a perfect meet because there's always going to be something we can improve on," Edwards said.
"We have tomorrow to work out some more kinks and head on over to Fountain Central and give it a tough fight on Saturday."
