Police, local FOP give back to those in need

Thursday, December 22, 2011
For the past 10 years the Greencastle Police Department has delivered gifts those in need during the holidays. This year children will receive much-needed items such as coats, winter boots, hats and gloves. Officer Ed Wilson and Chief Tom Sutherlin of the Greencastle Police Department organize the gifts to be delivered to needy families on Wednesday.

For the past 10 years the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 92 has delivered toys to needy children in Putnam County. This year is their biggest year yet, providing toys to more than 36 kids.

Children will not only receive toys, they will get items they need such as coats, winter boots and hats and gloves, which could not have been accomplished without the help of the public.

On Monday, Dec. 12 a woman came to the Police Department and dropped off some wrapped gifts. She told the Sgt. Chris Jones that eight years ago her grandson Braden (Age 6, Carthage, Ind.) had died in a fire before she could give the gifts to him.

So this year she wanted the presents to go a child that that would enjoy them that Braden would have wanted it that way. When Sgt. Jones asked the grandmother her name in case someone would have any questions the grandmother replied "Just say they're from Braden's Grandmother." With this in mind we had a last minute child that was age 6 that the presents will be going to.

The Fraternal Order of Police would like to thank the following for the support. Area 30 Law Enforcement teacher Capt. Charles Inman and his students for wrapping all the gifts, Hendershot Service Center, VFW Post 1550, Men's VFW Auxiliary, Bill Steele, Linda York, George and Ruth Stultz, Furniture Warehouse, Murray and Associates, Frank and Marie Laroche, Mary Lewis, Joe and Loretta Ash, Cox Trucking, Stone's Auto Body, Greencastle Elks, Greencastle Pediatric Dentistry, Eagles Lodge, Magic Circle Corporation, Carquest Auto Parts, Don Rumley, Linda Merkel and 3-D Auto Supply.

  • Just another reason to support our local businesses. I know Hendershots is always helping out this charity. All those donors are good people and they need our help so they can keep sharing.
