PUTNAMVILLE -- The Putnamville Correctional Facility (PCF) staff recently donated a barrel of food items to the Putnam County Food Pantry in Greencastle.

Amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, thoughts of those less fortunate spurred the Putnamville staff to conduct a food drive. Coordinated by Tonya Morris, PCF staff donated items during the month of November and delivered them just in time for Christmas dinners.

"I can't imagine a mom or dad worrying about how they're going to feed their kids at Christmas, and that's how most of the staff here feel," Morris said.

This year, the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry, a non-profit organization, has fed more than 700 people and households and served 62,000 meals.

Food Pantry Director and President, Judy Miller thanked PCF staff members for their generosity and relayed the urgent need for many more items.

"The people who work here are all volunteers and the food that we prepare and distribute only comes from donations. We'll take whatever anyone is willing to give," Miller said. "One can ... one penny ... it adds up to many. That's my motto."

The Food Pantry, located at 620 Tennessee St., Greencastle, is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and accepts both food and monetary donations.

"Those of us who are fortunate enough to have jobs during these difficult economic times have a responsibility to assist those who are less fortunate," PCF Supt. Stanley Knight said. "Our staff takes this responsibility seriously and always rise to the occasion,"
