PCPL events ring in the new year

Saturday, December 31, 2011

The New Year promises to be an interesting year at the Putnam County Public Library (PCPL) with a combination of existing programs and new events for 2012.

Winter Story Time returns on Tuesday, Jan. 3, beginning at 7 p.m. with "Family Time." The multi-age, multi-generational story time is a chance for children and adults to enjoy stories, games, songs, dance --and time together.

Beginning Jan. 5, each Thursday will have "Toddler Time" at 10 a.m. The 30-minute lap-sit time for toddlers and their parents is a way to enjoy stories, finger plays, simple crafts and incorporation of some American Sign Language.

At 11 a.m. each Thursday, "Raising Readers" is a theme-based story time for children from three to seven years of age. Each story is followed by a craft designed to build social skills, sharing, reinforce learning of numbers, colors and dexterity.

Thursdays at 4 p.m. features an "After School" story time that utilizes theme-based stories to foster social skills, communication and teamwork, along with games and crafts the follow the theme of the stories read.

On the second Thursday of each month, beginning on Jan. 12, the PCPL, in cooperation with the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department, will be devoted to "Brick Club." Students are invited to practice their building skills with Legos.

On Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m., the Putnam Public Library will hold a celebration to honor and recognize the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The entire community is invited to attend and to participate in many of the activities planned for the 2012 MLK Day Celebration. Information about the day's events will be provided in a more detailed article later.

The public is also invited to a special event on Tuesday, Jan. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. for a Conversation with the Author: Mike Mullin.

Mullin will discuss writing, geology, his novel "Ashfall" and give a tae kwon do demonstration -- an interest he and the protagonist of his novel share. Kirkus Reviews not only gave "Ashfall" a starred review, they also included it on their list of "Best Teen Books of 2011."

Again, a more detailed article on this program in the library's annual author series will follow.
