Marion McCauley Cook

Marion Cook, 95, of Greencastle, passed away peacefully at Garden Villa Nursing Facility, Station 4, in Bloomington. She has taken the last journey.

Marion Louise McCauley was born March 7, 1916 in Rock Island, Ill.

She was one of five children born to Anna Hunt McCauley and Hope W. McCauley: Ruth, William, Robert, Marion and Margaret.

Marion graduated from Rock Island High School and attended Augustana College, where she was affiliated with Kappa Tau sorority. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1939.

On Sept. 8, 1939 she married Donald "Jack" Cook. In 1945 they came to Greencastle when her husband became a member of the department of chemistry at DePauw University. They would spend the rest of their lives there.

She served as administrative assistant to Dr. Henry Hope, head of the fine arts department, Indiana University; Dean Bartlett, DePauw University; and later to her husband.

Marion was a life member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Indiana Historical Society and the Society of Indiana Pioneers. On her maternal side she was descended from some of the earliest Indiana pioneers.

Marion and Jack Cook founded the Putnam County Heritage Preservation Society and the Heritage Wall of Greencastle.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 65 years, D.J. Cook, and her beloved sister, Ms. Margaret McCauley.

Marion is survived by her daughters, Christine Shriner and husband William Shriner of Bloomington, and Hope Cook, Mankato, Minn.; two grandchildren, Ian Cook Carlstrom and Elspeth Cook Carlstrom; Jack's nephew, Robert Cook, Rock Island, Ill.; two nephews: Robert McCauley, Swarthmore, Pa., and Richard McCauley, Allentown, Pa., and a niece: Diane Taylor, Richmond, Va., along with many good friends.

Graveside services will be held at Rock Island, Ill., Memorial Park Cemetery in the springtime. In that final resting place of her husband and family, we will celebrate her life as a loving wife, mother, sister and friend.
