Tiger Sharks edged by Mustangs, looking toward conference meet Saturday

Thursday, January 5, 2012
Greencastle's Emily Wheeler won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.31. She was one of six individual winners on both the boys' and girls' squads Wednesday against Edgewood.

The swim teams of Greencastle High School hosted Edgewood Wednesday, with the Mustangs running away with two narrow wins on the evening. The boys' team fell 98-87, while the girls' lost 101-84.

"This was great competition and their kids swam great," GHS head coach Kent Menzel said. "I had a chance to talk to their coach during the meet and they were swimming as well as we were swimming. So we had just a whole slew of lifetime bests times tonight and a lot of season best times despite the fact we've had two very hard practices in a row.

"Now it's time to rest and work on a little bit of technique and refine our form, timing and pacing and things like that and get ready for Saturday (conference meet). That's the big target at this point," Menzel said.

The GHS boys' team had four individual winners taking five events and won the 200-yard medley relay to start off the night. The team of Nathan Gardner, Nash Firebaugh, Mitchell Ball and Elijah Brattain won the relay in a time of 1:51.76.

Brattain won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:21.86, while Ball took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly with his time of 58.70. Gardner won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:02.61.

Firebaugh was the Tiger Cubs' only swimmer to win multiple events on the night. He won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.42, and the 100-yard freestyle in 51.74.

On the girls' side, Emily Wheeler and Rosio Gomez won individual events on the night. Wheeler won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.31, while Gomez won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:26.55.

The team of Gomez, Rachel Custis, Nicolette Peters and Alison Howard won the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:15.46.

Looking forward to Saturday's West Central Conference meet at DePauw, Menzel believes his team will do well and will received some stiff competition from a county rival.

"I feel like our kids are going to swim very, very well," he said. "We kind of look inside of ourselves and we go for the best swims we can possibly produce and then kind of let it fall the way it falls. I think if our kids are able to do that, it will fall pretty well for us.

"North Putnam is very, very strong on the boys' side and we look for spirited competition from them. On the girls' side, Cascade is a bit of a mystery for us. We've not been able to get our eyes on any results at all. The only kind of look we've had at them was their meet against South Vermilion where they were pretty much where we were against South Vermillion," Menzel added.

Greencastle will compete at the WCC Meet at DePauw University Saturday with diving beginning at 8:30 a.m.
