Greencastle's six-game win streak snapped by Brown County

Monday, January 9, 2012

After experiencing the high of a six-game winning streak, the GHS girls' basketball team was dealt a harsh dose of reality when it matched up against Brown County Saturday. The Tiger Cubs came out flat after a big win the night before at Speedway and fell 56-32 to the Lady Eagles.

Brown County's size bothered the Tiger Cubs throughout the game as did their tight defense on the GHS guards. Greencastle scored the first points of the game on a Taylor Pruitt bucket, but were held scoreless for the most of the first quarter until Alex Basile hit a shot. The Tiger Cubs trailed 13-4 after one quarter.

"Their size bothered us quite a bit. We just had problems passing around their size. We have to get a little bit better at handling some of that pressure. It's hard to sustain that momentum we had last night (Friday). We had a great game last night," head coach Bradley Key said.

Greencastle doubled its offensive output in the second quarter, but failed to reach double digits in scoring until Pruitt hit a free throw with 1:30 remaining in the first half. The teams went to the locker room with GHS trailing 28-12.

The Tiger Cubs came out of the half still looking down, but Pruitt began attacking the goal and that seemed to spur on the GHS offense. In addition to Pruitt, Rayleigh Amis, Hannah Wainman and Jessi Covert all scored in the quarter. Brown County edged GHS 13-12 in the quarter to take a 41-24 edge to the final quarter.

The final quarter went as most of the first half had, with the Tiger Cubs struggling to find their shot and watching as the Lady Eagles fed Sasha Robinson down low for points. Brown County won the quarter 18-8 and the ultimately the game 56-32.

Key said his team needs to learn when to pull the trigger or keep working the offense.

"We have to get better at moving the ball and keep working it and realize when we can take it and when we can't. I still think you could see that Hannah and Taylor were exhausted tonight because they worked their butts off the night before," Key said.

Key told his team Saturday's game was a good preview for sectional, when if you pick up a win, you're back in action the next day and you need to be ready to play. He also noted Brown County is a good team, a team that recently defeated Bloomington North.

"It's still time to learn. It's not a conference game or the sectional, so we have South Putnam on Friday and we have to make sure we're prepared for that and come out and play with a lot of intensity," Key said.

Greencastle will travel to South Putnam Friday for a 6 p.m. tip.
