South Putnam swimmers split with Cadets on senior night

South Putnam's swim squads celebrated Senior Night Tuesday, honoring trio Brooke Boetjer, Avery Dotson and Sam Gould as the Eagles spilt with Cascade on the evening, the boys winning 102-80, with the girls falling 100-77.

Tayler Arnold led the charge for the Eagle boys, who claimed six first place finishes on the evening. The sophomore won the 50 free and 100 back, with senior Gould taking the 100 breaststroke and Matt Lund winning the 100 fly.

In addition, Arnold, Gould, Lund and John McCammack won the 200 medley relay while Arnold, Lund, McCammack and Ben Albright claimed the 200 free relay.

South's girls claimed three victories against the WCC champions. Two came from Morgan Deszi, who won the 500 free and 100 back, while Katie McHugh claimed the 100 breaststroke.

Eagles head coach Matthew Edwards said that he was pleased with the results.

"I'm very happy with the results. With the boys, I told them early in the meet that although we outdid Cascade in the conference, it still doesn't secure a victory tonight. They had to stay on top of their times," Edwards said.

"They're not only swimming the team next to them but the clock as well. They showed really good performances and I'm glad to see we came out on top."

"Cascade's girls placed second in the conference by a longshot, so I was really happy to see we came close in the team score," he continued. "The girls really came through tonight."

Edwards made mention of his three seniors, noting their contribution to the evening and season.

"This was a big meet for them. It's bittersweet. We're proud of our seniors. They've worked hard and have a long history. All three of them make up a substantial part of the team as far as culture and this meet was about them," Edwards said.

"All three of them did very good. Avery swam some new events, something you don't expect to do on senior night, but he did them very well," Edwards added.

"Brooke did well in her events as well. She's staying consistent. Sam won the breaststroke, but lost the diving by a point. He really stepped up his game tonight, trying several difficult dives he had not previously done."

The Eagles next travels to Edgewood on Thursday, but Edwards said the meets are starting to gear towards the upcoming county and sectional meets, especially for the girls' squad.

"It's time to focus. We've been really working these girls to death and they've been very good at taking it with a good attitude. We're keeping our yards up and staying on top of them," Edwards said.

"We have county a week from Thursday and it's time to focus because these are all big meets from here on out. We want to be a unit, united with the team, making sure we know where we're going and how we get there."
