Bill to fund road repairs passes out of Senate

Friday, January 20, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS -- Senate lawmakers today voted 48-0 to approve legislation authored by Sen. Connie Lawson (R-Danville) to allow Putnam County to have additional funds for maintenance and repair of roads.

Rep. Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) will sponsor Senate Bill 172 in the House of Representatives. The legislation will allow county officials to use 10 percent of its hazardous waste disposal tax revenues to help cover cost of maintaining and repairing county roads in Putnam County.

"I am appreciative of the Senate's passage of this legislation, which will provide Putnam County with needed road funding," Lawson said. "I will work with Rep. Baird to hopefully get this through the House and signed into law."

Currently the hazardous waste disposal tax funds are used to monitor and test for contamination of land near the disposal facility. They also provide training and equipment to local public health and safety officers who handle hazardous substances and waste emergencies.

SB 172 now moves to the House of Representatives for further action.

  • Will any go to Edgelea? How can it be legal for Edgelea residents to be made to pay for a public road? I understand Barrett Law for sewers for an individual use but a street that is public?

  • How about paving gravel roads first before repaving roads that are already paved.

  • NeverChanges-I agree fully. I know many Edgelea homeowners who have not agreed to this project and assessment.

  • Any chance any of this money goes to 900E/County Line N of 36? That road is absolutely terrible. I believe each county is responsible for their own south and east boundary roads. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

  • There are many roads in need of work in Putnam County. It is great to see the money going to something useful. This might put some more people back to work as well. Thank you Connie and Jim for a job well done!

  • Why doesn't the county use this money for the repairs in Edgelea??? Making the residents pay $1,000,000 for road repairs is ridiculous. As a resident of Edgelea, I can say that my opinion was never asked for. No one came to my house and asked if I was willing to pay for the repairs that the county is fully responsible for. The county is following in the footsteps of the big corporations in seeking a bailout from the residents to fund their road projects. With the econonmy still struggling, do you really think its a good idea Putnam county to place your burden on the taxpayers in this community? Do you plan on the residents that live on county roads to pay for those roads to be repaired?
