Saturday, February 11, 2012

The Putnam County Museum will hold its annual winter fundraiser, "An Evening at the Elms," the evening of Saturday, Feb. 18.

The 5:30-8:30 p.m. event held at The Elms, the traditional home of the DePauw University president at Wood and Seminary streets. Hosted by DePauw President Brian Casey, the event honors the continuing celebration of the university's 175th anniversary.

The evening will feature music from the DePauw School of Music and a silent auction of DePauw-related items.

Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served, and valet parking will be provided by Phi Delta Theta fraternity with parking proceeds going to the Indiana chapter of the ALS Association.

"Our 'Evening at the Elms' is always a fun yet elegant event," said Emily Knuth, fundraiser chairman and vice president of the Putnam County Museum Board. "This year's event promises to be even more special thanks to the additional touches DePauw is adding to mark its anniversary year."

Event sponsors include Asbury Towers, the Banner Graphic, Bittles and Hurt and Hopkins-Rector Funeral Homes, Collins Evans Real Estate, Cunningham Insurance, DePauw, DPU Art Department, First Financial Bank, Greencastle Hometown Dental and HBG Insurance and Bonds.

Two days prior to the Evening at the Elms, the museum is opening a new exhibit that celebrates DePauw's first 175 years.

The exhibit, which was developed by a team of six DePauw students, includes a timeline of student life and campus changes over the course of the university's history. It features a replica of The Boulder, a longtime campus landmark; the university's first newspaper, artifacts from the original campus building (known as The Edifice, and later, West College), old senior cords, stories of legendary DePauw students and professors, and more.

"In many ways, it's a story about how DePauw and the community interact," notes Sam Spahn, a DePauw senior from McCords-ville who spearheaded the exhibit's development.
