GHS musicians earn trip to state solo and ensemble finals

On Saturday, Feb. 11, members of the Greencastle High School Band participated in the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Contest at Terre Haute North High School.

Musicians competed in either solo entries or ensembles entries, which ranged from three to five members. Participants who received a gold medal rating in Group I will be participating at the state competition in Indianapolis on Saturday, Feb. 25.

Overall, Greencastle had 19 musicians qualify for the state competition, five solo acts and 14 members representing four ensembles.

The GHS results are as follows:

GROUP III

Gold Medal -- Alex Fleming, flute solo; Ichiro Mozawa, alto sax solo; Nathan Grzesiek, trumpet solo; Beth Ann Hansen, trombone solo; Taylor Secrest, trombone solo; Woodwind Trio, Kaitlynne Mason, Kendra Green and Shyanne Parker; Flute Quartet, Abby Patterson, Cassidy Crawford, Rebecca Moore and Nicolette Peters; Percussion Trio, Ethan Gill, Reggie Alex and Alex Dozier; Brass Quartet, Beth Ann Hansen, Sydney Cassida, Carly Rhine and Janelle Mason.

Silver Medal -- Brayden Watson, alto sax solo; Abbie Harms, alto sax solo.

GROUP II

Gold Medal -- Elijiah Brattain, alto sax solo.

Silver Medal -- Liz Johnson, flute solo; Woodwind Trio, Emily Gill, Alex Fleming and Liz Johnson; Brass Quintet, Nathan Grzesiek, Alex Asbell, Taylor Secrest, Mary Ivy and Meghan Dickey.

GROUP I

Gold Medal -- Hannah Gellman, horn solo; Alice Moore, alto sax solo; Sax Trio, Alice Moore, Alison Howard and Elijiah Brattain; Horn trio, Katie Hedge, Hannah Gellman and Melody White; Brass Quartet, A.J. Gerard, Katie Hedge, Alex Asbell and Taylor Secrest.

Silver Medal -- Emily Gill, clarinet solo; Matt White, alto sax solo.

Many of these students will be featured at the next GHS band concert, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 in Parker Auditorium of McAnally Center. Admission to the concert is free.

The Greencastle High School Band is under the direction of Robert Hedge.
