Area 30 looks toward the future

The Area 30 Career Center Educational Interlocal Board of Directors met on Tuesday morning to discuss the approval of a contract with Vincennes University as well as hear a welding presentation from Dan Hill.

The board approved the facility use for a GED+ program through the Department of Workforce Development. Through this program students who are getting their GED will also have the opportunity to receive certifications.

Hill provided the board with insight on opportunities in the welding industry as well as educational requirements, as Area 30 looks to expand its programs.

"There is a great demand for welders," said Hill. "Wherever anybody goes, they will find a job in welding."

Although, secondary schooling is not always required, it does make a difference.

"The more you practice at that skill, the better you'll be," said Hill. "A lot of companies require certification while some will give an industry standard test."

The board was also informed of a payment, which Area 30 received from Alternative Education for the amount of $1,056.15. The board agreed that the funds should be used as part of the plateau program at Area 30. Most likely, the money will be used to upgrade computers.
