Soil and Water Conservation District sets annual tree sale

Friday, March 16, 2012

Putnam County Soil and Water Conservation District is holding its second annual Tree/Native Plant Sale and will be taking orders until March 23.

The trees/plants will be available for pickup on April 14 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in the goat barn.

Arborvitae, Blue Spruce, Eastern White Pine and Norway Spruce are the evergreen species to choose from along with six deciduous choices of Serviceberry, Flowering Dogwood (white), White Oak, Burr Oak, Chinkapin Oak and River Birch.

All of the tree choices are 24-36 inches tall at time of pickup with the exception of the White Oak that is 18-24 inches tall.

The district will not furnish replacements or make refunds for any mortality of the seedlings. Sizes may vary due to weather conditions but all trees and plants are inspected upon arrival to assure they are in good condition.

Native plants offered this year focus on pollinators. District officials have tried to choose plants that will be in bloom from May to October to provide nectar for the pollinators. Bee populations have been declining due to a number of factors, two of which are habitat decline and colony collapse disorder.

The native plants help re-establish the habitat pollinators need and enjoy. The hope is to increase the populations of pollinators that in turn pollinate our flower gardens, fruits and vegetable gardens.

An order form may be found on the SWCD website, putnam.iswcd.org/ or by coming to the office.

Tree and plants cannot be ordered until payment is received. Checks should be made payable to Sycamore Trails RC&D. Only checks or cash are accepted since the office is not set up to accept credit or debit cards.

Persons may contact the Putnam SWCD office at 653-7454 for more information.
