ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam boys' golf team began its season in impressive fashion last week. They began their year with a second-place finish in a three-way match with Rockville and Turkey Run on April 9.

The Rox won with a total of 184, followed by North Putnam with 195 and Turkey Run with 195. Danny Smith led the Cougar charge by shooting a 45. Jake Smith carded a 49 and the Cougars' lone senior Quade Snyder shot a 51 with little practice time.

Mason Asher shot a 50, with Jon Willard shooting a 55 and Emmett Holsapple coming in with a 65.

"With four returning players and two new freshmen, the team did very well for the season opener, especially in the high winds encountered throughout the evening," new head coach Linda Patrick said.

She said one of the team's goals was to shoot under 200 and did so in their first match out.

The next night found the Cougars battling Monrovia and defeating the Bulldogs 187-221

Willard earned medalist honors for his round of 43. Danny Smith followed with a 47, Snyder had a 48 and Asher and Lance Clodfelter both shot 49. Jake Smith carded a 51 and Holsapple finished with a 55.

"Once again the team scored below 200 and are keeping on their path of shooting below 200 all season," Patrick said. "Most players were able to decrease their scores from last night (April 9) and only two increased by a few strokes."

The Cougars played in the Danville Invite Saturday, but play was suspended due to weather.
