South Putnam track struggles in tri-meet with Bulldogs, Warriors

Friday, April 27, 2012

With less than two weeks before the Putnam County meet begins, South Putnam's boys' and girls' track squads hosted Monrovia and Danville Thursday evening.

The Eagles found the competition tough as the girls fell 72-51-44 to the Bulldogs and Warriors, while boys lost to Danville and split with Monrovia 67-50-50.

The boys' squad picked up five wins on the evening through Michael James in the discus, Ryan Chestnut in the shot put, Hunter Barr in the 800, Trent Workman in the pole vault and the 3200 meter relay.

The girls' took four first place finishes with Jessica Jones winning the 800, Deborah Cheatham winning the high jump, Alex McHugh winning the discus and the 1,600-meter relay claiming top spot.

South Putnam girls' coach Brandon Welti said that, aside from the injury bug, things were moving along smoothly.

"It went about the way we expected it. Danville and Monrovia are both pretty deep and pretty strong. This is our first time seeing some of the bigger competition in some events," Welti said.

"It went fine. We have some injury issues coming out of it, but it was okay. We're seeing some improvements. There's still room to improve but we're getting there."

Boys' coach Carl Coons felt the squad did well against solid competition.

"It was a good meet. There're some pretty good performances here. Danville and Monrovia are both nice teams this year and it was a solid meet," Coons said.

"We had some good individual performances. Hunter Barr ran well in the 800 and the 3,200-meter relay. He had a nice meet. Trent Workman and Jesse Gardner did some good things for us in the pole vault.

"Tyler Neumann had a nice meet in the long jump and 400. Klayton Vittetow did well in the high jump and hurdles. Ryan Chestnut and Michael James went 1-2 in the shot and disc."

Coons added that the squad was heading in the right direction in the closing stages of the 2012 season.

"I think we're in good shape. We're where we ought to be. We're looking down the road and we're in pretty good shape right now," Coons said.

"We've got a few more practices and two more meets before we get into the county, conference and sectional meets.

"I like what we're doing right now. The kids are working hard and they're participating hard in the meets," Coons added.

"They're running hard and the kids getting the third and fourth places are important for us, too. They're doing a nice job of that."
