Tiger Cubs score win in tri-match at Cloverdale
CLOVERDALE -- As uncertain as the winds were during the match, the outcome of a tri-match between Cloverdale, Greencastle and Plainfield remained up in the air for many minutes following the round.
Problems arose when the scores were tallied before the final golfers had reported their scores. Greencastle, who brought only five golfers and declared so before the match, held a 165-160 advantage through five cards. However, Plainfield's sixth player came to the clubhouse with a score of 39, tipping the match in favor of the Quakers.
Greencastle head coach Steve Paquin expressed that he felt the sixth card shouldn't count due to the fact that he revealed he had brought a team of five before the match began. Paquin, Cloverdale head coach Doug Wokoun and Plainfield coach Jon Utterback stepped outside and when the lengthy discussion concluded, it was ruled that Plainfield's sixth card wouldn't count, thus giving GHS the five-stroke win.
As for the action on the course, the teams battled windy conditions for most of the round, with Greencastle and Plainfield powering through. Both teams' had players score sub-40 and Cloverdale had three golfers post rounds in the 40s.
Greencastle's Alec Davis shot the second lowest score of the day by carding a 38. Tanner Dean followed with a 40, while Brad Haussin and Luke Brotherton added rounds of 41. Raymond Stinson rounded out the GHS golfers with a round of 44.
Freddy Fislar and Colte Tomlinson led Cloverdale with rounds of 46. Ryan Mattocks fired a 47, with Brody Pfaff adding a 51 and Zach Hall a 53.
His team may have placed third on the night, but Wokoun thought his team put up some good scores Thursday.
"I'm really pleased with the play of our freshman tonight," Wokoun said. "They are our two low scorers and they're coming along. Freddy's had to battle some stuff and he had a couple rough holes tonight, but overall played real well. Rylan had two bad holes tonight, but otherwise played real well.
"They're starting to get it figured out. Aaron Whitlock hit the ball very well tonight, but he didn't score really well. It will come around. I feel real good about where he's at. Colte had a little bit better night, but we're still struggling and fighting some things," he added.
Wokoun also spoke about the difficult conditions in which the golfers participated in on the night.
"It was progressively difficult as they played," Wokoun said of the win. "The last couple of holes for everybody were a big challenge because of the way the wind was blowing. But you have to give Plainfield and Greencastle credit, they both played very well under the conditions."
Plainfield's Rylan Porter was medalist for his round of 37, edging Greencastle's Davis by one stroke.
"(It was a) good win under windy and hard course conditions," Paquin said.
