Fillmore to begin enforcing town nuisance ordinance

Saturday, May 5, 2012

FILLMORE -- The town's long-discussed nuisance ordinance now in effect, the task falls to Fillmore officials to enforce the new laws.

Town Marshal Darrel Bunten told the town council Thursday his department has set to work on this task.

Bunten said most of the overgrown lawns he has requested to be mowed have been already. Clerk-Treasurer Wanda Seidler now needs to write letters to the owners of those properties.

Councilman Curt Leonard asked about the enforcement of non-running or abandoned vehicles. Bunten said requests would be made of the owners to get the vehicles moved.

A change will need to be made to another of the town's new ordinances, as the 8,000-pound weight limit in the new traffic ordinance is too light for some of the town's farm and commercial traffic. Town attorney Mary Russell will be contacted about drafting an amendment.

In other business:

* Town cleanup day was set for Saturday, May 19, to coincide with Putnam County Tox-Away Day.

* Utility Manager Joe Cash presented an estimate for $7,500 for the replacement of pressure relief valves in the wastewater system. Councilors Leonard and Tami Parker voted in favor of the expenditure. Council president Alan Jones was not present Thursday.

* Cash also said he had 20 new water meters he is planning to have installed by May 15.

* The council and Cash gave credit to the absent Jones and the rest of his street-patching crew for their work on the town streets.

* The council announced an informal neighborhood meeting regarding the extension of People Pathways east of Fillmore. The plan would involve the final connection of the People Pathways Vandalia Trail.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. May 16, but the location is yet to be determined, with Fillmore Elementary or Fillmore Town Hall as options.

* The town will advertise for bids to buy the Dodge Intrepid recently replaced by the police department.

"It looks bad if we have a car sitting out when Darrel's going to be telling people to get rid of theirs," Leonard said.

The council will open the bids and accept the highest offer at the June 7 meeting.
