Tox-Away Day to bring Clean City Month to close

The Greencastle Civic League and partners have been diligently working during Clean City Month to make Greencastle a cleaner place to live.

The culminating event of Clean City Month will be the Putnam County Tox-Away Day, co-sponsored by the Greencastle Civic League and West Central Solid Waste District. The event will be held Saturday, May 19 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., rain or shine.

While many items will be accepted free of charge, others will be accepted for a nominal fee.

Large items such as sofas, recliners, mattresses, grills and mowers will be priced depending on item or load size. Televisions will also be accepted for a minimal charge.

Residents may bring tires ranging in size from car to tractor tires which will be accepted free of charge for a limited number of tires, depending on size, with nominal charges applied to additional tires.

A number of free items will be accepted. CFC/Freon and Non-CFC appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifies, air conditioners, stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters and microwaves all will be accepted free of charge this year.

E-waste such as computer monitors, printers and keyboards will also be accepted.

No fee will be applied for recyclable items, including aluminum cans, plastics, clear, brown and green glass, cardboard, newspapers and junk mail.

Items such as old fuels, motor oil, antifreeze, non-latex paint products, stains, paint thinner, sealers, pesticides, household cleaners, pool chemicals, elemental mercury, other mercury items such as thermometers and thermostats, oil filters, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, automotive batteries, acids, bases and old medications will be accepted free of charge.

Items that will not be accepted include yard waste, asbestos, explosives, ammunition, firearms, radioactive materials, lab chemicals, medical/infectious waste, controlled substances and grill propane tanks.

Putnam County Tox-Away Day is open to local residents only. Businesses are excluded.
